2002, Between, Anderson Gallery, Richmond, Virginia
My work is situated in the realm between the psychological interior and the physical exterior. The interior deals with emotions before words, while the exterior is concerned with the structure of communication and the material world. This state of in between questions how understanding and communication is constructed through the struggles of the self with the material world.
I want my work to question the fluctuation of definitions. The Self, forever in pursuit of understanding, is never fully defined and is always in a constant state of revision due to time and memory.
Time and memory play an important role in the fluctuation of definition. We exist in the present, thinking of the future but bound to the past. Memories allow for the ability to oscillate from present to past, dreams allow for the present to future, and the present is in between, is not definable, and infinite.
