It is so much fun to watch my son grow and change. And of course my love of art makes his changes in his visual creating all that more exciting. But it really is exciting because of what it means in terms of his brain changing- he is starting to think in terms of imagination and pictures. Before it was just about motion but now he is moving from the motion to the imagination! You will still see in the videos why the easel is still important for the large motor and whole body experience in creating. And you will see why art is important for language development!
For awhile he stalled on making art but then he started to pick up the markers again. He drew a person in September but then we hadn’t seen much of that since. (See his art progression here.)
At the end of January I started to see what could easily be identified as trains. Like in the picture below. Which was exciting!
Then what really took me by surprise- he took a train to observe and draw from- completely unprompted! Just was inspired to do so! I was blown away with this- it was one of those times as a parent that you beam with excitement just overwhelmed with the change that must be happening in thinking for this to take place!
Then a few days later he observed and drew a koala bear (the koala bear is on the toy box to his right). I was also happy to see people like images emerge! He had draw a few people in late August/ early September but then he hadn’t done anything like that since. He had faces, legs, toes, ears, and hair on the koalas!
Then another day he grab the dinosaur to observed and draw.
You can see that the images aren’t important and the work evolves and changes– it was killing me to NOT stop him when he started to color over the Koala’s because they were so stinking cute! But I have to just observe at this stage….
For fun here is a flash back of him 7 months ago. At the start of the video he says “Rain.” He has labeled the action and what he is creating but the creating is still tried more to the motion when compared to the recent videos.
And for my own fun- here he is when we first started making “art.” At around 17 months old.
What a wonderful lesson on how an artists translates what he sees and converts it into a full canvass of artistic representation art. He connects the images he sees to a planned piece. He allows his mind to connect images as diverse as a bear, a half moon, shooting stars, darkness. Brilliant!
He shows great talent and can put his thoughts pretty well with his artworks. Good job. 🙂
