I am so excited to be a Barefoot Books Ambassador. I started because I have a HUGE problem which is a love of children’s books. I have an even greater love of using them to extend learning and make art!
For my first party I picked the booked the book The Animal Boogie for the book to read to the children that were between the ages of 2-3.
Want to step inside the book- you can watch the video online for free!
Food
I made the food match the theme and keet it simple. Animal crackers, gummy worms (a stand in for snakes), and fruit (made to look like a tree from the jungle).
The Art Project: Add Spots to the Leopard
We did a simple stamping project and added spots to the leopard.
I gave the kids a piece of poster board that I had colored with yellow paint the night before. I traced the cat shape on the back of the poster board, and when the child was done stamping I cut the leopard out. The stamps are made by cutting regular sponges into a circle and hot gluing them onto clothes pins. We used regular tempra paint. For the eyes I add two drops of glue, and have the child place the eyes on.
Above the art area, I places the word “Leopard” and a picture of a Leopard, so they would know that we are adding his spots.
The finished product. This is a fun lesson that allows room for process art but then also will give a “finished” product.
Extending the Theme
To extend the theme of the book I made a simple sensory bin filled with peas and jungle animals and put out our safari puzzles. The jungle animals in the sensory bin are from Learning Resources Jungle Animal.
The puzzle is Melissa and Doug Safari Animals Peg Puzzle and one I found at Target.
I also made a matching game but left the game out because with all of the toys, food and books, there wasn’t any need. But I will use this to extend the book and learning with my son.
